Field Parameter Generator

Let report users pick which measure or column a visual shows. List the fields, give them friendly names, put them in order, and optionally group them. Get the parameter's DAX, a preview of the slicer, and a measure for titles that follow the selection.

The order here becomes the parameter's Order column, which is the order the slicer lists them in.

Paste a list of fields

One per line: Table[Field], or Label, Table[Field], optionally followed by , Group.

Field parameter table

Metric = {
    ("Revenue", NAMEOF('FactSales'[Total Sales]), 0),
    ("Profit", NAMEOF('FactSales'[Total Profit]), 1),
    ("Units", NAMEOF('FactSales'[Total Units]), 2)
}

How to apply it

  1. Modeling → New parameter → Fields. Name it Metric, add any one field, and select Create.
  2. Select the new Metric table and replace its formula with the DAX above.

Pasting this into New table instead makes an ordinary table: Desktop only treats it as a field parameter when it was created through the dialog.

Dynamic title measure (optional)

Returns the option picked in the Metric slicer, or a list when several are picked. Use it with a visual's title fx button.

Selected Metric =
VAR Picked = VALUES('Metric'[Metric])
RETURN
    IF(
        COUNTROWS(Picked) = 1,
        Picked,
        CONCATENATEX(Picked, 'Metric'[Metric], ", ")
    )

How field parameters work under the hood: Field Parameters.

Free, with no sign-in and no request limit. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Why edit the DAX at all? The Fields dialog is fine for a quick parameter, but renaming options, reordering them, or adding a grouping column all happen in the table's DAX. Writing it here first means one paste instead of a round of edits.

See Field Parameters for how the parameter table works, or browse all the Power BI tools.
