FMEA Calculator

Paste your failure modes with severity, occurrence, and detection ratings to get each one's RPN and action priority, with a severity override so a rare but serious failure mode isn't ranked as an afterthought. Then take the same rules into Power BI as DAX.

Action priority rules

Defaults match the FMEA dashboard tutorial: any failure mode with severity 9 or more is High whatever its RPN, then RPN 100+ is High and 50+ is Medium.

High4
Medium3
Low1

FM-03 has an RPN of only 27, which RPN alone would rank Low, but its severity of 9 makes it High priority. RPN multiplies the three ratings together, so a rare, easily detected failure mode can score low even when its consequence is severe.

The same rules as DAX measures

Current RPN and Action Priority with your rules, built on the Current Severity, Occurrence, and Detection measures from the tutorial, plus a color measure for an RPN bar chart.

Current RPN =
[Current Severity] * [Current Occurrence] * [Current Detection]

Action Priority =
SWITCH(
    TRUE(),
    [Current Severity] >= 9, "High", -- severity override: checked before RPN
    [Current RPN] >= 100, "High",
    [Current RPN] >= 50, "Medium",
    [Current RPN] > 0, "Low",
    BLANK()
)

-- Bar color for an RPN chart: Format > Bars > Color > fx > Format style: Field value
Priority Color =
SWITCH(
    [Action Priority],
    "High", "#F87171",
    "Medium", "#FBBF24",
    "Low", "#34D399"
)

Why RPN alone isn't enough. RPN multiplies three ordinal ratings, so very different failure modes can share a score: a 10 × 2 × 5 and a 4 × 5 × 5 both come to 100. Ranking by RPN alone treats them as equal, which is why a severity override, or the newer AIAG-VDA action priority tables, puts the consequence first.

The FMEA dashboard tutorial builds this in Power BI with before-and-after ratings, and FMEA & RPN Scoring covers the pattern on its own. Or browse all the Power BI tools.
